Mary grew up in Christchurch and attended Canterbury University, graduation L.L.B and B.A (majoring in Japanese language) in 1992. She moved to the North Island for work shortly thereafter. She has lived and worked in the lower North Island since then.

She is married with four children and lives in the Tararua district on the family’s dairy farm.
